Oldřich Kulhánek
Kreslíř, grafik a ilustrátor Oldřich Kulhánek je považován za jednoho z nejlepších českých grafiků a jeho věhlas již dávno přesáhl hranice české republiky. Narodil se 26. února 1940 v Praze, zemřel tamtéž 28. ledna 2013. V letech 1958 až 1964 Kulhánek studoval grafiku na Vysoké škole uměleckoprůmyslové. První samostatnou výstavu měl v roce 1968.
V sedmdesátých letech 20. století vystavil cyklus grafických listů (1967-1971), za který byl porzekuován a tehdejší STB jej dokonce uvrhla do vazby. Místem, kde byl cyklus jeho prací vystaven, bylo tehdejší československé velvyslanectví v Tokiu. V 70. letech měl úplný zákaz výstav, spolupráce s nakladatelstvími i publikování. Přesto se občas podařilo ilegálními cestami dostat jeho díla za železnou oponu - například v roce 1971 se pod pseudonymem Ulrich Böhm zúčastnil se svým grafickým listem Hommage á Albrecht Dürer výstavy v Norimberku. Z 80. let pocházejí Kulhánkovy slavné cykly Tváře a Ruce, grafické listy inspirované dílem George Orwella či stylizované podobizny historických osobností (Johannese Keplera, Tycha de Brahe či Rudolfa II.). Počátkem 90. let vytvořil Kulhánek návrhy českých bankovek. Podobu bankovek navrhl poprvé již v roce 1971, do tisku se ale nedostaly kvůli zmíněnému Kulhánkovu stíhání za grafiky, které odsoudil tehdejší režim. V 90. letech Kulhánek oprášil mimo jiné motiv zápasů, inspirován vrcholovým sportem, a vytvořil řadu dalších figurálních cyklů, včetně například souboru litografií Ecce homo či cyklu leptů Erotické hrátky. V posledním desetiletí života pracoval Oldřich Kulhánek na cyklech litografií Job, Parabola, Pád, Speciální dialog a sv. Šebestian.
Oldrich Kulhanek was born on 26 February 1940 in Prague. He started studying art at the Secondary Art School in Prague. From 1958 he studied at the College of Applied Arts in Prague in the studio of Prof. Karel Svolinsky. In 1964, Kulhanek completed his studies with a dissertation and illustrations in a book of verses called "Dream" by Vladimir Holan.
In 1971 Kulhanek was arrested by the StB (the Czech version of KGB) and accused of sedition and defamation of the political representatives in communist countries in his graphic sheets. It was namely the "abuse" of Stalin's face in his graphic art. The 70`s were thus marked by a total ban from exhibiting, cooperation with publishing houses and any public art. Nevertheless, Kulhanek continued to work and did not wish to play the part of a persona non grata. His art, unlike its author, found its way into the free world illegally. For instance, Kulhanek's graphic art was displayed in the "Hommage a Albrecht Dürer" exhibition in Nuremberg in 1971. The exhibition was organised to celebrate the anniversary of the 500th birthday of A. Dürer and Kulhanek exhibited under the pseudonym of Ulrich Böhm.. At the beginning of the 80`s, he was offered an opportunity to produce his first book illustrations. In 1990 Kulhanek visited the USA for the first time to participate in a Lithographic Workshop in Los Angeles. Since then he has been invited to the States many times. In the summer of 1991, Kulhanek gave a seminar on drawing in the Atlantic Center for the Arts, New Smyrne Beach and was a guest lecturer at the University of Houston - Clear Lake in Texas in 1995. Between 1992 and 1993 Kulhanek was involved in the new Czech banknotes project. During 1994 he created a cycle of lithographs called "Ecce homo".A large monography about him, written by Eva Petrova, was published in 1997. The new millenium has not disrupted Kulhanek`s interest in human body. He has been working on a new project, whose main motive is to represent the biblical character of Job. Oldrich Kulhanek has had many exbitions recently, e.g. exhibitions in the Republic of South Africa ( in fact it was the first introduction of Czech art there) or the exhibition in Arnot Art Museum in New York, where the best works of world modern realism were presented. He died on 28 January 2013
